I always think of myself as “not academic”, but as I write that on paper as a 58 year old, what does it really mean and to a certain extent why does it matter.
Learning in our school years is about absorbing information to pass exams. As a “mature student” I want and need a different approach.
There are numerous adult learning theories and my quick internet search gave me a synopsis of at least 10.
I want to share the one that works for me – I learn by doing – David Kolb’s experiential learning has four stages:
Concrete experience – direct involvement in a task
I am currently studying a new methodology of somatic coaching. We start by applying the methodology to ourselves, very concrete experience and also engage practice clients to work with, even more direct practical learning.
Reflective observation – observing and reflecting on the experience
I write in a journal most days, curious about what I noticed in how I was in the world, I often refer to it as how I showed up. I don’t judge, give myself a rating or berate myself, but externalising in writing helps me become conscious of my way of being. Reflecting is a rich source of learning. As part of the course, we have to submit reflections on a regular basis.
Abstract conceptualization: developing theories or frameworks from the reflection
When we reflect with vulnerability, we start to see beyond the stories we have constructed and create openings for new ways of being. My learning around somatic coaching is not only the practice of doing it but being able to develop my own frame of reference for describing it, demonstrating it and bringing that skilfully and appropriately to my leadership development work.
Active experimentation: testing theories in new situations, continuing with hands-on learning and adapting to new contexts
Being out in the world, working with different people, being open about practicing and learning and continually reflecting and adjusting will be my active experimentation space for the next 10 months and beyond.
Yes I have to pass an exam, but learning by doing, reflecting and adjusting is my north star for growing as a human being.
